Fully Alive

It was with a little trepidation that I applied to be on the launch team for Susie Larson’s newest book Fully Alive. I wasn’t sure what I would think about this book that I was promising to promote. Concerned about the various differences in our theology, I thought it might be full of false promises and unbiblical takes on stress and medicine and health. Or that perhaps it would be dry and boring or just the opposite - emotive and sappy. But, I really was curious about the book, because I happen to agree with the premise as stated in the back cover blurb, “Research shows that our emotional, spiritual, and physical health are tightly intertwined. Spiritual difficulties can have physical consequences, and physical illnesses can have emotional and even spiritual ramifications.”

Fortunately, all of my fears turned out to be unfounded. Instead, I discovered that in Fully Alive Susie Larson has developed a balanced view of how to thrive in our life. Using very personal examples, Susie shows the reader how to be free from guilt and other insecurities. Each chapter contains many helpful exercises for the reader to complete - journaling, reciting Scripture, etc. - each one reinforcing the truth revealed in the previous pages. Great book on mental and spiritual health. I recommend it to anyone who is struggling with a spiritual, mental, or physical difficulty and anyone who could use a good dose of truth about their health. Have a notebook on hand before starting it!

Cautions and caveats: As mentioned above, I don’t agree to the letter with all of Susie’s theology, you may find a few areas where you disagree as well. Also, there were a few places where Fully Alive seemed to imply that we should all “just do better,” however, I don’t believe that is the intent of the book, and, when taken as a whole, the book implies the opposite.
