Love and Gelato
If you ask a member of my family what is important in a vacation, they will tell you that proximity to a great ice cream shop is a must. My family loves ice cream. My family would live on ice cream if they could. We log just about as many hours in our local ice cream store as we do in the library - which is saying something. And, ice cream lovers the world over agree: gelato is the best form of ice cream man ever conceived. When I discovered—in the library no less—there is a book with the title Love and Gelato I knew it was kismet.
After her mother passes away, 16 year old Lina finds herself in the middle of Tuscany living with a man she’d never met, barely ever even heard of, and who just might be her father. Sorting through her grief over her mother is hard enough, but now she is doing it in a foreign country while trying to make new friends, navigating a new living situation, and learning more about Howard, her maybe father. Swirled into each scoop of this new life are pages of the journal her mom kept while she lived in Tuscany as a student seventeen years before; and the cherry on top is the possibility of romance.
Okay, guys. I am not exaggerating when I say that I loved Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch. Sweet and poignant, the story drew me in from the first pages. I appreciated Ms. Welch’s approach to addressing Lina’s grief, and the twists and turns in the story kept me engaged. The fact that she stayed away from sex and foul language was a big plus! I recommend this book to readers 14 and up, especially if they love Italy, ice cream, and international romance.
Bonus: I just discovered that Jenna Evans Welch wrote another novel titled Love and Luck. You can bet that’s going on my list!
